Abuse and Termination Policy

This policy outlines unacceptable client conduct towards practitioners and the procedures for addressing such behavior, including termination of services, within our mental health practice.

I. Definitions

  • Abuse: Any act or behavior by a client that causes or creates a risk of harm to a practitioner. This includes, but is not limited to:

    • Physical abuse: Inflicting physical pain or injury, or threats thereof.

    • Verbal abuse: Use of insulting, demeaning, or threatening language.

    • Emotional abuse: Behavior that causes emotional distress, such as intimidation, harassment, or manipulation.

    • Sexual harassment: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.  

  • Practitioner: Any individual providing mental health services within our organization, including therapists, counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and support staff.

II. Zero Tolerance Policy

Our practice has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of abuse towards our practitioners. We are committed to providing a safe and respectful working environment for our staff.

III. Reporting Procedures

  • Documentation: All incidents of abuse, including the date, time, nature of the abuse, and any witnesses, will be documented in writing.

IV. Intervention and Response

  • Initial Response: The designated contact person will assess the situation and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of the practitioner.

  • Communication with Client: Depending on the severity and nature of the abuse, the client may be contacted to address their behavior and discuss the potential consequences.

V. Grounds for Termination of Services

  • Continued Abuse: If a client continues to engage in abusive behavior despite interventions, services may be terminated.

  • Severity of Abuse: In severe cases services may be terminated immediately.

VI. Termination Procedures

  • Written Notice: The client will be provided with written notice of termination, clearly stating the reason for termination and the effective date.

  • Safety Measures: If safety is a concern, termination may be communicated via phone or email, and alternative arrangements may be made for the return of client property.

  • Referrals: When appropriate, the client will be provided with referrals to other mental health providers.

VIII. Confidentiality

All reports and records related to client abuse will be kept confidential and will only be shared with individuals who have a legitimate need to know.

IX. Non-Discrimination

This policy will be applied consistently and without discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or age.
